Swiss Re, a major global reinsurance company, is significantly expanding its technology footprint in India, transforming the country into a crucial global tech hub for the firm. Having operated in India for 25 years, initially with shared services, Swiss Re’s global capability center has rapidly evolved to encompass a wide range of functions across its value chain, alongside a substantial increase in its tech workforce.
According to Amit Kalra, managing director and head of Swiss Re Global Business Solutions, the company is consolidating its global tech operations internally, which is driving this growth in India. Over the past three years, Swiss Re’s tech team in its Bengaluru and Hyderabad centers has surged from 150 to 750 professionals. The company plans to further expand its Hyderabad office, aiming to employ over 1,000 tech professionals in India within the next 12 to 18 months. This expansion will mean that India will house approximately 40-50% of Swiss Re’s global engineering talent.
The recruitment drive is primarily focused on hiring product engineers, architects, and data engineers, with a balanced approach to both experienced professionals and recent graduates, providing specialized training in insurance and reinsurance. Beyond just staffing, India is also taking on critical responsibilities, including leading Swiss Re’s new fee-based solutions business and spearheading pilot projects for Generative AI applications in claims processing and enhancing customer experience.
