Bengaluru Becomes Atlassian Largest Global R&D Hub Outside US and Australia

Atlassian, the global leader in collaboration and productivity software behind products like Jira, Confluence, and Loom, has significantly scaled its presence in India with the unveiling of a sprawling new Research and Development (R&D) Centre in Bengaluru. This move reinforces India’s central and strategic role in the company’s global product development roadmap and marks a substantial commitment to the region’s technical talent pool.

The newly launched facility, which spans over 2 lakh square feet, is a massive four times the size of its previous Bengaluru office. It is designed to accommodate over 1,000 employees across two levels, signalling a long-term investment in building out mission-critical capabilities from India. Since first establishing a presence in the country in 2018 with a team of just 60, Atlassian has seen explosive growth, scaling its workforce to over 2,500 people, making India its largest employee base outside of its home markets in Australia and the United States.

Crucially, the vast majority of the India team, nearly 75%, is engaged in high-value R&D work. This includes core product development across strategic areas such as enterprise search, commerce, data residency, and crucial customer success functions, positioning the Bengaluru hub as an indispensable innovation engine for the NASDAQ-listed tech giant.

The office itself is purpose-built to support Atlassian’s pioneering ‘Team Anywhere’ policy, a distributed-first approach to work that offers employees maximum flexibility. The workspace is designed less for individual seating and more for collaborative creativity, featuring state-of-the-art flexible workstations, 70 collaboration studios, wellness areas, and cutting-edge technology to foster seamless teamwork across global time zones.

As Rajeev Rajan, Chief Technology Officer at Atlassian, noted, “India continues to be one of our most important R&D hubs, and Bengaluru sits at the heart of this growth. This new world-class R&D Centre is more than just a larger space, it’s a symbol of our investment in the future of work, in distributed teamwork, and most importantly, in the exceptional talent we have here in India.” The expansion cements Bengaluru’s position as a global nerve center for enterprise software innovation.
